Scientific Leader of the Geophysical Institute and Scientific Secretary of the German Society for the History of Geophysics and Cosmical Physics, Member of the Leibniz-Societät, Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of South Australia, Member of the International Committee for History of Geology (INHIGEO), Member of the German Physical Society and German Geophysical Society, and Max-Planck-Society, Honorary Member of the Serbian Society for Geology, Co-Chairman of the Interdivisional Commission for the History of International Association for Geomagnetism (IAGA), and Member of the Inter. Commission Development Countries Awards/Grants of the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" (German Research Organisation) for studies of the Krakatoa (1883) and its role for atmospheric pollution, and by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. He has paid out of his own pocket and donated to the Cuban Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy many books and hundreds of scientific articles. He has helped Cuban scientific institutions with funding and information about scientific conferences. He is Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba since 2004.
