Brief history

The Academy of Sciences of Cuba is an official institution of the Cuban independent consultative status in science. The Academy, throughout its history, has taken various organizational forms according to the environmental conditions in which it has conducted its business. The first Academy of Sciences was founded, after many years of negotiations with the Spanish crown, May 19, 1861 under the name of Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. Following the establishment of the Republic in 1902, the Academy continued with the same structure and organization losing its name the adjective "Royal". In 1962, the Cuban revolutionary process created the National Commission for the Academy of Sciences of Cuba and for the first time the Academy acquired an effective range nationwide. As part of the process of institutionalization of the revolutionary state in 1976 with the law 1323 of the Organization of the Central State Administration, the Academy of Sciences of Cuba was established as an administrative body with the status of National Institute. In 1980, the transfer to the Academy functions of the State Committee for Science and Technology and given the task of governing body for science and technology at the national level, the Academy acquires Ministerial range. In 1994, the reorganization of the Central Administration of the Cuban State, the Academy, together with the structure of the National Commission of Environment and Natural Resources and the Executive Secretariat for Nuclear Affairs, became the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba. In April 1996, by Decree-Law 163, the Academy, formed by scientists of outstanding merit, representatives personally, in an honorary capacity and condition of Academic of the national scientific community, is established in its current character with the objectives major contribution to the development of Cuban science and dissemination of national and universal scientific progress, prestige scientific research of excellence in the country, raise professional ethics and the social value of science as well as strengthen ties scientists and their organizations together, with society and with the world.
